We will be delving into what are called the Psalms of Ascent, or Songs of Degrees. The Psalms from 120-134 were read as the priests ascended to the place of worship. Each one of these Psalms starts with the ascription "shir hama aloth", Hebrew which means “songs ascents”. They have been called Gradual Psalms, Songs of Degrees, Songs of Stages, or Pilgrim Songs. Scholars believe the Levite priests and singers used these Psalms as they ascended the 15 steps to minister at the temple. The first 5 Psalms will be our focus in this series, Ps. 120, 121, 122, 123, 124. Ascent means a “step or an upward climb.” These Psalms or proclamation songs were used for ascending into the presence of God.

The Psalms of Ascent were intended to help God’s people think and feel rightly about God, their world and circumstances, and the heights and depths of life while celebrating the faithfulness of God.

Series Scriptures: Psalms 120;121;122;123;124
