When it comes to rest, it is not just something God asks of mankind; rather, it is a practice He models Himself, the purpose being the enjoyment of His creation. Rest impacts the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of individuals, fostering an awareness of our reliance on and trust in God. The inability to cease working is a form of bondage. The striving and stretching to continually want more without thought or regard to its effects on our soul and what we have is an internal oppressor.
Psalm 23 communicates the ability to be at rest regardless of the season or situations we find ourselves in. Rest is not just an intentional action we move towards, but an intentional position we put ourselves in. As a Jesus follower, one of the areas we work toward is a place of rest. Jesus stated the Sabbath came into existence for man’s sake, and that rest is a necessity, not a luxury.
